Character Design and Creation

This month we did work in Zbrush, wich is now my new favorite program. in week one we did eight models. Then week two we continued to build up on four of the eight. In week 3 we work on two of the four wile also building two props for each model.
Here is my asset 1.
From top to bottom is my reference, week 3 and week 2 progress

Here is my asset 2.
From top to bottom is my reference, week 3 and week 2 progress

Here are my completed assets with props, along with an ear build.

⁃ What worked and what didn’t?
  • Sculpting my models out instead of building them piece by piece help tremendously when it came to making more realistic models.
  • One thing I really struggled with was retopologizing. I couldn't seem to get a good edge flow.

⁃ What would you do differently next time?
  •  If I could go back and take this course again I would push myself to do more complex models because I have gained the knowledge to do so in a more timely manner. During this month I had many sleepless nights trying to meet my deadlines. So, hopefully now knowing more than previously I could make more reference accurate and complex models and props.
-Did you encounter any major issues, if so how did you adapt?
  • Major problems I encountered were a lack of sleep causing me to make many mistakes and ended up costing me far more time than if I would have slept in the first place. I adapted by taking short naps in between modeling.
  • Another issue I had was with the UVs. I feel I still don't have sufficient knowledge and I should research how to have a better workflow. At the very least when it comes to heads.
-How did the end result come out (give yourself honest feedback)?
  • I'm proud of my hair and anatomy excluding the face. I feel they both look too alien.
  • The feet need work and the hands look knobby.
  • I'm happy with the folds and creases in the fabrics, but the loincloth for my Witch Doctor wouldn't load into Maya. So, I suppose I had some very bad geometry.
  • I could have had more complex props, I did, however, fix the handle on my dagger. But now when I move it the handle separates strangely.

Projects and Portfolio III Final

We spent a month making and perfecting two animations walk cycles. They had to one portraying emotion and one portraying weight. We were peer evaluated each week to help eachouther find issues we may not have seen. I am proud of how far I've come in this short month. This class has really helped me hone my skills and forced me to go over every detail repeatedly to make sure I could make it as professional as possible.

Here is my final walk cycle portraying weight.

Project and Portfolio III

Playblast of week one walk cycle.
I had issues when rendering because a large
black bar/plain cuts my model in half

2DA Week 1

Here is my Morph animation for week one. I chose my to favorite superheroes to morph together. I really got to know the drawing program I was using for this. I also was almost constantly flipping though my animation with Toki LineTest to get it as nice as I could.

Here is my bouncing ball animation. This was the fist project I did that had a chart that went with it. Learning how to use the chart was difficult at first but I've gotten the hang of it.

With this project I had to give the ball a different weight. I chose a very heavy ball. This meant it had to fall quicker with less frames.

Fundamentals of Art Week4

Week four was so stressful trying to get done along with week three's work. I spent nearly every waking moment working on them trying to get everything done. I drew most of what's here on the car ride to and from my Oma's house for her birthday and we were also going to celebrate mine considering I was in the hospital during mine. The drive consisted mostly of very bumpy back roads so excuse some of the shakiness. I'll say which was from the drive.

Perspective is not at all my strong suit and I really struggled with it. At least I know I've gotten better from doing and redoing so many perspective drawings.

I really liked doing this exercise.
I finished this one in the car. (not driving, just to let you know)

This one was done on the way there, so it took about 30-40 minutes to do.

I did this one on the way back and then took a nap until we got home. I ate so much cake.
This is by far my favorite we did this week, look at how sassy he is.

My scanner didn't want to work making the image quality not so great.

I liked this one because I took these rubbings and made them look like they belonged to a different object.

Fundamentals of Art Week3

Week three I was in the hospital, so I did most of this during week 4. I'm okay now, though, so that's good. Doing two weeks worth of work in one was a struggle. We also did some lighting on eggs to give different atmospheres to the images, but I'm not putting those here because they have a lot of writing that go with them.

Here is a completed scene. Now that I'm looking at it I feel like it needs more shadows to it.

Shading is my favorite thing to do so this week made me very happy.

Here we have a light and dark toned composition.
This exercise made me realize how important dark tone shading is to make something more realistic. Hence, why I want to darken the top picture so bad.

Here are some boxes that are in need of darker shading, and better lines.

Fundamentals of Art Week2

Week two we had more work to do and we began to work more on drawing.

We had to do continual line drawings, which I was initially worried about, but I ended up liking the freedom  and flow they had. Also orchids are really pretty flowers and perfect for this type of drawing. Those brushes however were not and I had trouble getting them to line up.

Couches are hard to draw in perspective.

Look at that movement, wow. This was a lot of fun to draw and it's a good shading exercise.

Legs fun to draw.
Wire frame drawings are fun and help when it comes to modeling because they remind me of the faces and edges in Maya.
Also why are apples so weirdly shaped?

We were only supposed to lay out a scene here,
but I overachieved and did way more than I meant to.

Fundamentals of Art Week1

For week one of this course, we went over the basics. We made drawings based on these fundamentals that we see daily. We also had to take an image and make compositions from the pictures to make one completely different. There was also a powerpoint project, but I won't put that here.

I'm proud of my texture and unity images, the others I would like to do again.

Here are my cropped images I really like the far right one and the colors I was able to take from the clouds.

Model Creation Week4

Last week for this course. Wish I was doing better in this course. I might take it again because I feel too far behind what the expectations for the class were. On a lighter note, check out this sword.

We had to make three more props, so I made a sword, chest, and clock. I wish I had more time to add some ZBrush detail. I have bad time management and poor skill to blame for that one though. I'll just have to practice more and learn how to better use my tools.

Look at that chain! I'm so proud. This sword hilt is my best work by far.

Oh man, this clock.
I wanted to carve in the face detail but, I think its still pretty good.
UVing this clock was so much work.

This chest I made to be able to open, if you look closely you can see the hinges in the back. I changed the pivot point to the back to it would open like a chest would. If you double-click on the Rotate tool you should get the option to edit your pivot point and move it around.

Model Creation Week3

I learned from last week and made my models first and was able to make all three including UVs. but this week I had to add texture and detail with ZBrush. ZBrush is not my friend. I took forever trying to figure it out, watching and rewatching my teacher's explanation and I was still lost. Also, I tried to look at the reference and draw it out. that is until I noticed by accident the greatest setting ever. At the top of the page, there is a transparency bar that would make the program transparent. It allowed me to trace the design on to get a better representation of what I was trying to replicate. Too bad I was already finished with this weeks work when I realized. Oh well, at least I'll know for the future.

The belt on this book took forever. If anyone can tell me how to not make it black I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not sure if its supposed to be blue...

Making designs on a cylindrical surface is far more difficult than on a flat one. I was unable to make this one look even decent design wise.

Model Creation Week2

This week we had to do three models, and UV the models. I made the mistake of making the model and then UV that model before making a new one. So I had two done and one not even worth turning in. UVing is a lengthy process that sometimes takes a few tries to get right.

I'm very happy with this knife, the twist in the handle was tricky and I had to look up a tutorial on how to make horns so I could get it just right.

I used a lot of the mirror tool and duplicate tool to make this.
The trim around the candle took me longer than anything but I'm still not happy with it.

Model Creation Week1

Okay, so new Maya related course. This time, we did far more complex models and had a lot more to do. We had to make four large props to fill a given room. I chose a bench, table, chair, and bookshelf. I spent nearly three days just on the bookshelf, trying to get it perfect. Then I realised I still had three to do and I found myself rushing to get them done.  So, time management wasn't great this week.
The chair I did too a very long time to get the design to look the way I wanted.

For whatever reason the mirror tool hated me when I tried to make a  copy of the leg design.
Also, I forgot to place holding edges before I turned this in.  Make sure to place holding edges because without them your model will look completely different when in smooth mode (hot key: 3 to preview).

Here are the chair and table.

I made the drawer separate so that I could open and close it. what took the longest to get done for this model would have to be the handle, so much detail on the smallest part of the model.

3D Foundations Week4

This week we put our best models into a scene. The majority of the things were provided, such as the desk and lamp. The bottle stopper, jar, aerosol can and Tupperware container, however, were modelled by me. Below are rendered and non-rendered images of the scene.

This is the final rendered scene.
I can't wait until I'm able to make a scene like this from scratch.

3D Foundations Week3

This week the models were more difficult, and they took me far longer to complete. cutting holes in the geometry was difficult so I only did some. As you can see with the recorder. Also making the mouth peice was taxing to get in the right shape. I ended up redoing it multipul times.

Here are the models that I did this week.

I'm very happy with this spray nozzle, thanks to the extrude tool.

Also, that recorder was the bane of my existence. Why I struggled with it for so long, I will never know.
